HK Star Rain Li Once Turned Down A S$17Mil Proposal From A Tycoon; Says Her Net Worth Is More Than That Now

Hongkong actress Rain Li, 38, who played a vengeful tai tai in the recently-concluded drama Modern Dynasty, shared in an interview with Hongkong media that she has had many opportunities to become a lady of leisure in real life.

The singer-actress revealed that she once received a proposal from a rich Chinese businessman, who had offered her HK$100mil (S$17.2mil) on the condition that she quit showbiz when she marries him.

“I remember I’d just finished filming [2011 drama] Home Temptation then, and quite a lot of people knew me in China. There was a coal industry scion who was wooing me. After going out for a couple of meals together, he told me not to work in this industry anymore, and to marry him. He said that his parents would not approve of me if I continued to be an actress. Then he said he could give me HK$100mil as compensation. Right now, my net worth is way more than that!” she said.

Rain added that the entire relationship was just wishful thinking on the businessman's part, and that she didn’t pay him any attention after his ‘proposal’.

Later, Rain heard through the grapevine that he ended up tying the knot with another actress. However, their marriage ended in divorce soon after.

Rain also said that she feels she’s “not the type” to marry into money. According to the actress, she had to start working from a young age to support her family, and that relying on others to bring home the bacon doesn’t sit well with her.

Thankfully, she’s managed to increase her net worth substantially with a couple of astute property investments and it's estimated to be worth at least HK$200mil (S$34.4mil).

Rain now lives in a rented luxury apartment in Shanghai, and it's said that her rent is about HK$100,000 (S$17,213) a month.

“It was really tough for a couple of years, I scrimped and saved just to work, and would only rest during Chinese New Year. Looking back now, thank goodness I wasn’t lazy back then,” she said.

In Nov 2020, Rain announced that she had divorced her husband, Chinese tycoon Eric Huang, after less than two years of marriage. Eric's family reportedly has a net worth of more than 1bil yuan (S$204mil), .

At that time, the couple revealed that their split was amicable and that they had drifted apart during the pandemic because they lived in different cities. Rain was based in Hongkong then, and Eric in China.
