The actress also opened up about how she dealt with her boyfriend's death over 10 years ago.

Hongkong actress Michelle Yim has been single ever since her long-time boyfriend, footballer-turned-actor Wan Chi Keung, died of nasopharyngeal cancer at the age of 53 in 2010.

The pair dated for 26 years but were never married, despite what some rumours claimed.

During her appearance on new TVB talk show Twinkle Twinkle Single Star, the 65-year-old opened up about their decision not to tie the knot, saying, “We didn’t need it. We had a lot of freedom and trust in our relationship, so we didn’t need a marriage certificate at all.”

Michelle then admitted that she still has suitors, but she has decided to adopt a carefree attitude towards love.

“It’s not that I’ve given up, I just feel like having freedom is really not bad,” she explained. “Of course, if I meet someone who is healthy and has a good personality, then why not? But I believe the most important thing is to love yourself. As you get older, you should cherish life and your friends.”

Speaking of friends, Michelle revealed that she and a few of her close pals had gone to see a lawyer to sign an agreement stating that they will help manage each other’s finances in the future.

“When someone is old and has no children or relatives, what should they do when they get sick? Someone needs to pay for their hospitalisation!” she said.

When asked how she dealt with her late beau’s illness, Michelle said that when they first found out about the cancer in the early ‘90s, they chose to face it positively. Chi Keung even travelled to the United States and Europe to meet his buddies from his soccer-playing days.

When he finally succumbed to the disease in February 2010, Michelle admitted that she “wasn’t very shocked” as she had already mentally prepared herself for that moment.

In fact, she took just two days off from filming to handle his funeral before quickly returning to work again.

“There was no pain or sorrow in our outlook on life, and I have always cherished the joy that he brought me,” she shared. “Even though he is gone, I often feel like he is still here by my side.”

Her optimism is something that Michelle tries to spread to those around her.

“I encourage my friends not to always pay attention at the negative side of things, but to also look on the bright side more, she said.
