Ruco Chan says he turned down a job that would pay him millions just to stay with TVB
Hong Kong actor Ruco Chan, 46, was at a promotional event for upcoming TVB drama The Invisibles, where he fielded multiple questions from reporters wondering if he had been slighted by the broadcaster.
You see, rumours have been rife that Ruco had angered the powers that be at TVB after allegedly refusing to play the lead role in The Invisibles.
It was alleged that Ruco was originally been earmarked to play the lead, but had declined the project after his request for a pay raise was rejected by TVB. As a result, the role went to Kenneth Ma, 49, instead.
It was also said that TVB decided to sideline the actor from then on, demoting him from leading man status. Ruco’s role in The Invisibles is said to be a cameo, and he is not seen on the drama’s poster as well.
Some reports even went as far as to claim that Ruco wanted to provide for his family, but lacked the courage to leave TVB and strike out on his own, which was why he was content to remain with TVB and continue taking on supporting roles instead.
Ruco tied the knot with Hong Kong actress and Miss Hong Kong finalist Phoebe Sin, 32, in 2018. The couple has a daughter, Quinta, four.
However, Ruco has now refuted these reports.
Ruco and Phoebe recently celebrated their daughter's fourth birthday.
“The economy has not been doing well these few years, I don’t think most people will think that they’ll get a raise. I hope everyone will be able to get through this rough spot together,” he said.
Ruco went on to say: “In the past year or two, I haven’t really responded to reporters. Recently, I have more dramas airing and I’ll concentrate on acting out different roles well.” The actor will play the lead in three upcoming dramas this year, including Secret Door and Sinister Beings 2.
He also explained that he was not on the poster for The Invisibles ‘cos he doesn’t want the audience to figure out what his role in the drama is, though he did hint that he’ll be playing a villain.
All fine with TVB.
Finally, he shot down reports that he doesn’t dare to leave TVB, revealing that he rejected an offer that would have paid him millions two years ago, in favour of staying with TVB.
“Actually, two years ago, when I was discussing [my contract] with [TVB], I gave up an offer worth eight figures to stay in TVB. I did wonder if doing so was impulsive, [but] I stayed with the company. To be frank, the most important thing is the relationships I’ve forged here, and the promises that were made,” he said.
