Sean 'Diddy' Combs has to pay Sting S$6,600 a day for the rest of his life for sampling Every Breath You Take

Sting is US$5,000 (S$6,600) richer every day — courtesy of rapper Sean 'Diddy' Combs.

Combs, 53, has confirmed that he is paying Sting, 71, a five-figure sum, after sampling the Police song, 'Every Breath You Take' on his 1997 hit 'I'll Be Missing You'.

Diddy was responding to a resurfaced 2018 clip of The Breakfast Club in which the Police frontman said he was receiving US$2,000 a day from Diddy.

Turns out, that sum is incorrect.

Diddy wrote: "Nope. 5K a day. Love to my brother @OfficialSting (sic)"

In the interview, Sting also shared that Diddy asked for permission to sample 'Every Breath You Take' only after it had been released. "We're very good friends now," he added. "It was a beautiful version of that song."

Diddy's iconic tune is dedicated to The Notorious B.I.G. — whose real name was Christopher Wallace, but he was also known as Biggie Smalls — who was murdered in March 1997 aged 24.

Last month, Diddy paid tribute to Biggie, describing him as the "greatest rapper of all time" on the 26th anniversary of his death.

He tweeted: "There will NEVER be another. The GREATEST RAPPER OF ALL TIME. Today we celebrate and honor you king. Love and miss you!! (sic)"

Biggie was shot dead in a drive-by shooting in Los Angeles in March 1997, just six months after fellow rapper Tupac Shakur was murdered in a drive-by shooting in Las Vegas.
