Trailer Watch: Ewan McGregor Is Back As Obi-Wan Kenobi And He’s Hiding From Darth Vader In Disney+ Series
Ewan McGregor is picking up his lightsabre for another tour as Jedi master Obi-Wan Kenobi.
Disney+ has dropped the teaser trailer for the highly anticipated Obi-Wan Kenobi limited series — the streaming service’s third Star Wars series following The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett — which is set 10 years after the events of 2005’s Revenge of the Sith, which ended with one-time Chosen One Anakin Skywalker (Hayden Christensen) joining the Dark Side full-time as Darth Vader, but not before Obi-Wan cut him down to tree stump in a fiery duel.
During this time, Obi-Wan is living in exile on Tatooine while looking out for a young Luke Skywalker, who lives with his Uncle Owen (Joel Edgerton) and Aunt Beru (Bonnie Piesse). Meanwhile, the Empire is hunting down Jedi who survived Emperor Palpatine’s Order 66 decree, with the Grand Inquisitor (Homeland’s Rupert Friend) leading the massacre.
In the trailer, we see that the action not only takes place on the sandy dunes of Tatooine but also on a planet called Daiyu, which, according to writer Joby Harold in an Entertainment Weekly interview, “sort of has a Hongkong feel to it.” There, Obi-Wan has a confrontation with Reva (The Queen’s Gambit’s Moses Ingram), a red lightsabre-wielding Inquisitor.
Elsewhere, we hear snippets of John Williams’ ‘Duel of the Fates’ score and Darth Vader’s asthmatic wheeze, which can only mean one thing: Obi-Wan and the Sith Lord will be going at it for Round 2.
McGregor and Hayden previously made brief vocal cameos of their respective characters in 2019’s The Rise of Skywalker. Hayden is slated to appear in Ahsoka, another Star Wars limited series starring Rosario Dawson as in the title role of Anakin Skywalker’s disciple.
The series, directed by Deborah Chow (The Mandalorian), also stars Kumail Nanjiani, Indira Varma, O’Shea Jackson Jr, and Sung Kang. It will launch on Disney+ on May 25, which happens to be the 45th anniversary of the first Star Wars movie’s original US release. Watch the trailer here:
